Why Education?

The Situation

While the Philippines is on track to economic recovery–in 2015, it was the fourth-fastest growing economy in the world, according to CNN–it still has to deal with the mass poverty that affects more than 80% of the population. According to the World Bank, 82% of Filipinos live under US$5 a day, and approximately half of these survive on only US$2.

The Solution

Here at Real LIFE, we believe that education and character development is the way out of poverty.

The benefits of education include:

  • A return of investment of 15.2% per year, and a 54-86% salary increase in the long term (Greenstone and Looney, 2011)
  • A 69-73% increase in health benefits for graduate and post-graduate degree holders in the long term (Baum et al., 2013)
  • The proper disciplines and methodical approaches needed for solving problems after school

The road to poverty alleviation, however, is not easy. Studies show that:

  • One of six Filipino children are not in school because either they would rather seek employment, they show a lack of interest, or they cannot afford to pay for their education (DepEd and National Statistical Coordination Board)
  • Among the 10% of Filipinos that have university degrees, only 0.6% of them are poor (National Statistics Office)

So if education is the solution, does this mean that only 0.6% of the poor will be able to make it out of poverty?

We refuse to believe so, and this is why we do what we do. Not every young person has to become a statistic. We can work together to change a life, change the nation.
