15 Years of Real LIFE

This 2022, we celebrate 15 years of inspiring hope and changing lives! We thank God for the privilege of empowering our scholars to reach for their dreams.

Real LIFE won't be where it is today without the support of our partners and the hard work of our past and current leaders, team members, volunteers, and coaches.

Watch the video below and listen to our founder and past executive directors share about our humble beginnings.

OUR STORY

  • Real LIFE may officially be 15 this year, but our history extends further than that.

Our scholarship program began in 2003 when Doc Joey Castro (then senior pastor of Victory Pasig) and his wife felt a burden to help students who were on the verge of dropping out from school due to financial difficulties.

In the early months, the Castros tapped into their income and savings to personally support the beneficiaries. Over time, friends who came to know of the couple’s work started to contribute too, believing in the importance of education.

The success of this ground-up initiative led to an increased demand for funding and programs. The Castros’ humble advocacy was subsequently formalized in 2007 to become today’s Real LIFE Foundation.

  • In 2016, we expanded our reach by partnering with Victory Philippines.

We open a Real LIFE center where Victory is located. They partner with us by assigning some of their staff members to function as volunteers for us to run the scholarship program in their local center. They have played a vital role in ensuring that every Real LIFE scholar receives the care and attention that they need.

Today, we have 84 Real LIFE centers across the Philippines. Along with this growth, we have been able to support more students.

  • As the methods for financial transactions have evolved over the years, so has the way we remit funds to our scholars.

When our founders Docs Joey and Tess Castro first started their educational assistance effort, they would meet with their scholars who stayed behind after church services. On weeks where funding was available, these students would line up to receive physical cash that covered not just their allowance, but also school fees and other requirements.

Today, we open bank accounts for all of our scholars, and ensure each has a debit card. This way, they can receive fund transfers in real time and perform online banking transactions, even after graduating from our program.

We also provide basic financial education to equip them with knowledge about managing their money, so that they are financially ready for crises and exercise prudence.

  • Reaching more students has always been at the heart of our work.

So in 2007, within just a few months of incorporation, we quickly set up centers in Makati City and Quezon City, in addition to our existing location in Pasig City.

Then in 2008, Laoag became the site of our very first provincial center, outside of Metro Manila.

  • At Real LIFE, we believe in the power of a good community. This is why we intentionally surround our scholars with people who encourage them, pray for them, and believe in them even when they may not believe in themselves.

Through our partnership with Every Nation Campus (ENC) Philippines, our scholars have ENC campus missionaries who walk through life with them. Beyond teaching scholars values that guide their lives, these coaches mentor them on personal problems as well.

Over the years, we have seen perspectives and mindsets transformed as a result.
