S.Y. 2016-2017, BS Industrial Psychology

I finished high school while working in my aunt’s sari-sari store in our province. To earn money, I would also make paper roses for special occasions, selling each for 10 PHP. I made crafts through lettering and drawings. I also had other projects for people and accepted whatever amount they were willing to give. When I had some extra money, I would buy ingredients for polvoron, maruya, maja blanca, and other delicacies that I can make and sell them for 5 PHP each in our neighborhood. Through this, I can earn 50 PHP, which becomes my allowance for two days.

My parents used to tell me that I couldn’t go to college because they could not afford it. They advised me to get a job instead to be able to help them out, but this only fanned the flame inside of me to excel in my studies and succeed.

After graduating from high school, I went to Manila with my sister in hopes of getting into college. But when our family got hit by another crisis, I had to go back to Quezon Province and get a part-time job. I eventually found out about the Real LIFE scholarship program when I returned.

During the application process, I went back to school. Unfortunately, my father suffered a heart attack during that time, so I had to go back to the province and work as a sales lady at a glassware store while selling rice cakes on the side. In the midst of my bleak situation, hope arose as my scholarship application with Real LIFE was approved.

I recently graduated from the Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Psychology, Cum Laude.

Real LIFE became an avenue where God provided all that I needed in and out of school, empowered me to be a servant leader, and taught me how to make wise decisions and appreciate others. I am grateful for all the love and support I received from my coaches and coordinators even through the hard times.

I hope to get a job in social welfare. I also want to pursue studies in the fields of guidance and counseling for kids.

When I was in kindergarten, I won in a coloring contest. I waited for my mother at the awarding ceremony, but only my aunt arrived, crying. I was not aware that as I waited for my mom, she was fighting for her life. At the age of 30, she died that day, leaving behind three children aged two, five, and seven. A week after my mother’s death, my father left us, taking away with him all my mother’s savings and insurance benefits.

I still vividly remember when my father told me, “o, itong P2,000, ipamasahe mo pa-Maynila. Magtrabaho ka. Ayusin mo ‘yang buhay mo. ‘Wag mo kaming alalahanin dito. Pangarap mo ang unahin mo.” (“Use this P2,000 to go to Manila. Work there and get a better life. Don’t worry about us here. Put your dreams first.”) My father sold the only pig we had for P2,000 to send me to Manila.
