Before I became a Real LIFE scholar, I was unsure if I would be able to finish my studies due to lack of finances. I experienced working every summer vacation as a pharmacy aid in Laguna and as a dishwasher to earn money for my school expenses. I also offered tutorials for my classmates in return for a snack or a cup of noodles.

My father was the only one working in our family and his income was only enough to provide for our bills. What made things more difficult was his recovery stage after getting hospitalized and undergoing a series of physical therapy sessions.

But praise God for open doors! In 2016, my leader from church Ate Rachelle who was then a Real LIFE scholar, introduced the scholarship to me. She encouraged me to apply since we weren't sure if I would be able to finish my studies. By the grace of God, I was accepted.

That time, I felt so undeserving to receive the scholarship because I saw many students like me who also needed it. But there are no accidents when God orchestrates His plans for your life. He chooses the unqualified. He has His own ways.

I am so grateful and blessed to be a Real LIFE scholar not just because of the financial support they give us, but also because of their heart to help us in the areas of leadership, integrity, faith, and excellence. We experienced having mentors who became our accountability partners and who taught us to be faithful with what God gives us.

Real LIFE Foundation taught me to trust that God is always able and He is always in control. Even now that I am working, this is what I hold on to— that He has better plans for us, plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us hope and a future.

I now work as an Admin Coordinator for a technology company and I’m able to help with the expenses at home. God is so faithful to provide for Mama’s hospitalization and her medicines for recovery. He provides for us in so many ways beyond my income, beyond what we can imagine.

Our situation improved by learning to trust God more even in the midst of difficulties. God is also using us as a channel of blessing to other families. What God has done in our lives became our testimony that He will always provide. His blessings are not limited to money. It includes the opportunities He gives us, our relationship with Him, and the privilege to be a blessing to others.

When I was in kindergarten, I won in a coloring contest. I waited for my mother at the awarding ceremony, but only my aunt arrived, crying. I was not aware that as I waited for my mom, she was fighting for her life. At the age of 30, she died that day, leaving behind three children aged two, five, and seven. I still vividly remember when my father told me, “o, itong P2,000, ipamasahe mo pa-Maynila. Magtrabaho ka. Ayusin mo ‘yang buhay mo. ‘Wag mo kaming alalahanin dito. Pangarap mo ang unahin mo.” (“Use this P2,000 to go to Manila. Work there and get a better life. Don’t worry about us here. Put your dreams first.”) My father sold the only pig we had for P2,000 to send me to Manila.
