I was appointed by my professor as class secretary for three semesters. Sometimes, when we had low grades, some of my classmates would ask me to change our results in the records. But I chose to remain honest.

Never ko pong pinalitan ‘yung scores ko kahit mismo pong akin mababa. Ayaw ko pong nilalamangan ‘yung mga kaklase ko. Mas gugustuhin ko pang mababa ang grades ko kaysa galing sa kasamaan ang pagkakaroon ko ng mataas na grades. (I never changed my scores even when they were low. I don’t like taking advantage over my classmates. I would rather keep my low scores than be dishonest.) Grades are just numbers. It is my character that matters.

I still vividly remember when my father told me, “o, itong P2,000, ipamasahe mo pa-Maynila. Magtrabaho ka. Ayusin mo ‘yang buhay mo. ‘Wag mo kaming alalahanin dito. Pangarap mo ang unahin mo.” (“Use this P2,000 to go to Manila. Work there and get a better life. Don’t worry about us here. Put your dreams first.”) My father sold the only pig we had for P2,000 to send me to Manila.
